African Copper Mining Projects 2023 Snapshot

China’s MMG Ltd. announced it has closed one of the biggest copper deals of the year to date, agreeing to pay $1.9 billion for a mine in southern Africa.  MMG agreed to buy Cuprous Capital Ltd., a private company which owned the Khoemacau operation in Botswana, which has been producing copper since 2021.

Khoeomacau/Ghanzi Copper

Khoemacau is a copper silver mining operation which was completed in 2021 which can produce 60kt per annum copper and 1.6Moz per annum silver metal in concentrate at full run rate. 

Ivanhoe Mines is a Canadian mining company focused on developing four mining and exploration projects in Southern Africa. The Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of the Congo began commercial operations in July 2021.

Selebi Mines
North American Nickel
(TSX-V: PNRL)

Premium Nickel Resources Ltd. (TSX-V: PNRL) completed the purchase of Selebi Mines Project and have since began the process to accurately re-characterize the remaining resources including drill testing near mine, high-conductance borehole electromagnetic exploration targets, resource in-fill drilling, additional metallurgical testing, and early scoping studies.

Trigon restarted the Kombat Mine after 14 years of closure. The company expanded its mineral resource after acquiring the Copper King Extension, a +30km area of strike length and exploration ground around the Kombat Mine.

Koryx Copper holds 100% of the Haib Copper deposit in the south of Namibia and is arguably the oldest porphyry deposit in the world. Koryx Copper recently disclosed a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA).
